If you had a friend who had never seen Top Gear (I know, why would you be their friend?), what 5 episodes would you show them to give them an idea of what Top Gear is about? I had a think about this and have come up with my own 5, but let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
SERIES 3, EPISODE 5
Surely we’d have to start with the Hilux test? When Top Gear tests a car, they don’t play games. The Hilux was bashed, crashed, drowned, and set on fire. Yet the thing still drove and was therefore given a spot to rest in the studio. So not only would your friend see how immature and, well, simply brilliant Top Gear’s ways of testing cars is, but they’d actually be shown a helpful review from the trio (for once).
SERIES 8, EPISODE 3
The amphibious challenge from Top Gear was a memorable one to say the least. The episode shows the characters’ ingenuity, reluctancy to fail, and more than anything, how funny it is when they do finally fail…
SERIES 4, EPISODE 3
The very first cheap car challenge of Top Gear. With them being asked how much car they could buy with only £100, Jezza bought a Volvo, James an Audi, and Hammond Rover. More importantly, this is the start of a very successful and missed segment. We need more of these in The Grand Tour!
SERIES 5, EPISODE 5
The Ford Transit is a legend, which is why they gave it to racing driver Sabine Schmitz to drive around the Nurburgring with the task of beating Jeremy’s 10 minute lap in a Jaguar X-Type. Like the van, this episode is itself a legend, and is one of the most memorable of all time.
SERIES 19, EPISODE 6
For me, this has to be one of the funniest and most interesting and road trip provoking episodes of Top Gear… ever. It made me want to take my car somewhere stupid and do stupid things with it. If you want to find out exactly how funny these three can be, this is the episode for you.
