The Top Five Special Episodes Of All Time

Season 2 of The Grand Tour ended with the Mozambique mini-special, and just around the corner, we have a full-length Colombia special. Last year, we were treated to the 2=part Namibia special, and it was a bright spot in a great, but understandably shaky inaugural season.

Obviously, the boys are no strangers to specials taking place in exotic locations, so let’s take a look back at the top five Top Gear specials of all time (in no particular order):

Patagonia Special

For better or worse, this is one of the most famous specials the boys have ever been involved in. In fact, I would argue it’s probably one of, if not the, most infamous episode of Top Gear. Sure they boys have run into actual danger before, but those angry Argentinians looked absolutely ready to kill all three of them.

Vietnam Special

This is my favorite special episode of all time, and it doesn’t even involve any cars! Watching Jeremy, James, and Richard on little scooters and motorcycles traverse Vietnam was brilliant, and the ending was one of the most spectacular displays of nature I have ever seen.

Bolivia Special

If the Patagonia Special nearly resulted in the boys’ deaths via an angry mob, then the Bolivia Special was their brush with death courtesy of Mother Nature. It’s absolutely insane how close Jeremy and Co. came to the edge of the Death Road. It gave me chills even watching it from the comfort of my own couch.

US South Special

To be somewhat fair, the boys kind of set themselves up with the offensive slogans, but boy howdy, we Americans certainly showed our best side in this episode, didn’t we? Also, never forget the controversy with the dead cow, and Richard complaining about “peeling” a squirrel.

Botswana Special

The epic majesty of Africa was explored in this special, and we were introduced to the intrepid Oliver, Richard’s beloved Opel Kadett. This had everything a good special needed; an incredible location, cheap cars that broke down a lot, and dangerous situations punctuated by humor.

Tony Hsieh

Cars, the Buffalo Bills, video games, comics, sandwiches, jelly beans, and the shooting star press; these are the things that Tony loves (in addition to his family, of course). When he's not spending his time writing tech reviews for theslanted.com, Tony puts his lifetime love of muscle cars to use on his 2015 Mustang GT. Tony's top three favorite cars are the 1973 Mustang Mach 1, Ferrari 458, and Aston Martin DBS.
