Amazon, the online shopping titan that became the new home of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May last year, launched Amazon Vehicles today. The new portal is where anyone can now go and do some good old fashioned research on thousands of cars using all of Amazon’s features that make buying products on their site so easy.
Much in the same way people can submit product reviews on Amazon to educate potential buyers, it looks like Amazon Vehicles is meant to take things to the next level and be a community where car buyers can browse car pages with detailed information, reviews, ratings, and user-submitted photos and videos for any given car. Anyone who does upload media of their rides can also answer questions from the Amazon Vehicles community.
If you take a look at any vehicle page, there’s actually really nothing you can’t find out. The vehicle pages have all of the typical information you’d find on most auto brand websites, but they’ve also got tabs for “Safety & Recalls” and “News & Accolades.” The pages also tell you a car’s strengths, history of changes, value, specs, and more.
It’s not that this is really a bad “catch” or anything, but the simple truth for now is that the only thing you won’t be able to do is actually buy a car. As of right now, there’s not much insight into what Amazon’s exact plans are for this new car portal and according to Automotive News, it’s an extension for Amazon’s Automotive Parts & Accessories department where you can buy parts and accessories at will (like we do with most things on Amazon).
What it Could Mean
If The Grand Tour can be what all of us fans know and believe it can be (basically the Best Thing Ever), it would be no-brainer for Amazon to actually start selling cars through Amazon Vehicles. Success of the show would give the retail giant so much credibility and leverage within the automotive industry and bridge the gap between entertainment and consumerism in a way that we’ve never seen before.
Amazon did pay $250 million for the rights to The Grand Tour after all, so this could all be a part of the master plan.
