The Grand Tour

Top 3 Quotes From Jeremy Clarkson

Who doesn’t love a good quote? Politicians live and die for them. A good sound-bite can either get a politician elected, or cost him or her their career. Who can forget Howard Dean’s 2004 scream? Twelve years ago one poorly timed scream was all it took to end ones political aspirations. Oh how far American politics has fallen since…

Politicians are not the only ones whose careers can be made by a good quote. Mark Twain, Albert Einstein, Earnest Hemingway, and of course Shakespeare, all benefited from being able to word smith up a good quotable line. Here at the Grand Tour Nation, were quite fond of “Poo Came Out” from our own Jeremy Clarkson. We liked it so much we even made a t-shirt! teespring.com/stores/gtnation

One of my favorite clips can be found here:

Who can forget other zingers such as, “Speed has never killed anyone. Suddenly becoming stationary, that’s what gets you.” Or, “Change gear, change gear, check mirror, murder a prostitute, change gear, change gear, murder. That’s a lot of effort in a day.”

Of course, everyone has their own tastes, but for myself, I think that Jeremy Clarkson is most brilliant when he when leaves the world of cars behind and allows his commentary to fall on the world at large. So here are my Top 3 Quotes from Jeremy Clarkson.

#3 Small boys everywhere know that in a fight between Superman, James Bond and the Terminator, James Bond would win. Well, it’s the same story in Star Wars. In a fight between the Enterprise, Stingray, Thunderbird 2 and the Millennium Falcon, the Falcon would reign supreme. It just would. The end.

#2 You had Mr. Churchill on the radio explaining that we’d never surrender, and above you had the Spitfire, and you couldn’t help thinking: Yes, we can win this thing. Possibly, just possibly, the Spitfire is the greatest machine ever made. – Spitfire, p. 276

#1 Hurricane Katrina didn’t just knock a few bricks from the fabric of a levee. More importantly, it knocked a few bricks also from the notion that America is a shining beacon of hope for a troubled world. It isn’t. It’s a house of straw. With no education to glue that straw together. – “Flood that released America’s demons”, The Sun, September 10, 2005

Please know that I love New Orleans. I mean, I truly love that city. I visit regularly as some of my best friends in the world live there. I have even seriously considered buying a home and moving because of the deep love I have for the place. My pick for #1 is because of my love for the city, not in spite of it. It’s a quote that cuts deep into the American politic and exposes some hard truths. Frankly, we could use more of that across all societies.
