The Grand Tour Could Be Scaling The Most Active Volcano In The World For Season 4

We recently reported that The Grand Tour trio were heading to France where we followed a number of Instagram posts by Jeremy Clarkson. On closer inspection of these posts and the comments, we were surprised to find that this may not be the whole truth.

The island that Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are lounging on in one of the presenter’s posts in fact turns out to be Reunion island, which is a French department in the Indian Ocean. Not only is it famous for its rich rainforests and coral reefs, but its main attraction is something much more dangerous than we expected.

The most iconic landmark of the island is Piton de la Fournaise, a climbable active volcano standing 2,632m tall. It’s said to be one of the most active volcanos in the world, so the boys better watch out if they’re planning on climbing it. An English translation comes to a daunting ‘Peak of the Furnace’.

The volcano has already erupted twice this year, with the latest occurring on Tuesday 11 June 2019 at 6.35 am. Another volcano, named the Piton des Neiges, is the highest point of the island coming in at 3,070 m tall. Unlike the Piton de la Fournaise, this volcano is dormant. Both volcanos are treacherous to climb due to the foliage growing up their sides.

The tropical beaches and incredible wildlife will surely be enjoyed by Clarkson, Hammond and May, but let’s hope they’re careful if they decide to scale the dangerous volcanoes. We can’t wait! Take a look at James May scaling a volcano in an Arctic Truck below to get you really in the mood.
