Jeremy Clarkson Defends His High BBC Income

Presenting Top Gear is one hell of a job, as Jeremy Clarkson quickly found out when he started back in 1988. Once the show was rebooted in 2002, ‘hard work’ took on a whole new definition for the talented presenter, who, without knowing it, took a vow to devote his life to the BBC motoring show.

Of course, after the ‘fracas’ involving a steak and a producer, Clarkson’s contract wasn’t renewed, allowing him and his co-presenters Richard Hammond and James May to sign a contract with Amazon for a reported $160 million. But before that, Clarkson was known to be one of the most well paid characters under the BBC.

This brings questions, but Clarkson is keen to defend his high income.

“You get that for your entire life being taken over,’ he told The Times. ‘So when you look at all those BBC salaries that are published, you think, ‘You get that for an hour’s work.’

“No, you don’t. You get that for your entire life being taken over by, “Selfie! Selfie! Photo! Photo! Photo!” Somebody has to pay for that.

Jeremy Clarkson recently wrote about how dangerous filming for The Grand Tour Season 4 has been, with James May almost losing his life when he got stuck in a monsoon where four other people were killed. Read about that here.

  1. It was the best not just motoring program but best tv show ever produced! The on screen charisma between this trio is unparalleled and only rivaled by the gt now that they’ve worked the kinks out. So why wouldnt the top show demand top pay for it’s stars . I’d imagine the only ones critisizing Jeza are people from his generation that are still flower children to embarrassed to admit they respect the amount stones it takes to truly speak your mind . Not giving in to what our world is turning into is an admiral character trait if you ask me. I’m not saying to attack anyone but when they ask for it , I’m glad there are a few real men left out there calling bullshit! Keep it up, I’ve got your back!

  2. Jeremy,James and Richard did something that NO other car show has done. Copied, replicated, duplicated but not close by a long ways. They each gave themselves to the show and over the years that Chemistry is genuine. The time away from family should cost a great deal. Sure the got to play with their mates. Good on them pay them what the want. Just my opinion.

  3. Sorry to everyone, it’s my fault. A long while ago I prayed the 3 would live forever because they were the perfect foursome on the perfect show. THE STIG. You do your thing Jeremy, never let them dull your shine.

  4. This is nonsense let them make bank people are jealous and angry because they dont make money. Get a job work hard and stop hating on these funny money making mfer’s . Stop hating you buster ass Democrats that want freebies to make them millionaires while sitting on your couch. Good luck. In the voice like the dumb taken movies.

  5. People complaining simply because some people can’t stand that the BBC is publicly funded but are the same ones who would also howl murder if it was taken away. Do they complain about how much the NHS heart surgeon who just saved their Grannies lives salary costs? Actually, they probably do.

  6. All those complaining about other people’s income need to get a life. It isn’t Jeremy’s fault your life stinks and you don’t make as much as you would like. That is your own fault. Now, stop being a petty little crybaby and move on with your life.

    1. It IS clarkson’s fault my life stinks and I don’t earn as much as I would like. I applied for a top gear presenters job in 1988 and he got it.
