The Grand Tour Behind The Scenes: A Look Back At the Driver Search

Not that long ago, The American was on our screens as The Grand Tour’s not so tame racing driver. While he had a few supporters, the overwhelming consensus was that he had to go. Amazon listened and dropped The American, leading to a number of months where no one knew who the replacement driver would be.

Just prior to the launch of the second season, we were treated tro a number of behind the scenes videos of Jeremy, James, and Richard searching for their new driver. Granted, these videos were all scripted and done in jest, but they were still extremely entertaining to watch.

The series of videos started off with a roundtable discussion about letting The American go:

Next, Jeremy submitted his entrant for consideration: the star of Dunkirk, Tom Hardy. No wait…it was Formula One driver Mark Webber in an unbiased pair of laps:

After that, Richard unveiled his entrant; a stunt driver, who put on a show for two laps:

Finally, the voice of reason, James May, introduced his candidate; a car thief:

In the end, none of them panned out, and we were introduced to Abbie Eaton, a properly fast driver and a wonderful fit for The Grand Tour!
