Sebastian Vettel Slams F1 As Talks Of Salary Cap Continues

After the idea of a salary cap for F1 drivers was introduced, many drivers and team chiefs have given their input and opinions on the divisive thought. Now, Aston Martin driver and four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel has added his thoughts to the pot. And, as we’ve come to expect from the German, he has a brilliant idea.

Calling this cap “wrong”, he begins by calling out the F1 and its reasoning behind the cap:

“Isn’t it a funny coincidence that it’s the first time that teams can actually make money with racing in F1, and something like the salary cap for drivers pops up?

“Just thinking… isn’t that funny?”

He continues, giving his opinion on what would be the best way to go about this, and what to do with the money saved:

“Obviously, we have a budget cap now, which pushes the model towards earnings for all the teams,” he continued.

“I think maybe they should be capped in terms of having certain fixed earnings, and everything beyond that should, I don’t know, go to a certain pool to do great things with it and have a positive impact.”

It’s no surprise that Vettel wants the money to go to charities and purposes that need it. Only recently did he talk about the impact of F1 on the environment and how he feels about it, as well as other pressing issues around the world.

Maybe not so surprisingly, he spoke with great dignity, knowledge, and sensibility:

“It does [make me a hypocrite], you’re right when you laugh,” he said.

“There are questions I ask myself every day. I’m not a saint. I’m very concerned when it comes to the future, on these topics when it comes to energy, energy dependence, and where we’re going in the future.

“It’s something that I am asking myself [whether I should be driving] and travelling the world.

“There’s certain things that are in my control and certain things that are not.”

He continued, discussing his love of driving:

“It’s my passion to drive a car, I love it. Every time I step in a car I love it.

“When I get out of the car, of course I am thinking as well – is this something we should do? Travel the world, wasting resources?

“On the other hand, we are entertaining people. During COVID, we were one of the first sports to start again.

“When everyone’s heads were about to explode, there were Formula 1 races back on. I’m not saying Formula 1 has this huge position in the world to deliver entertainment.

“A lot of people couldn’t perform and a lot of people missed that. I think, in general, if we didn’t have that, we would go mad.

“There are a lot of these questions I ask myself. There are a lot of things that I do because I feel I can do them better. Do I need to take a plane every time? No if I can take a car.

“Like I said, there’s certain things in my control, and certain things outside my control.”

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
