F1 News: Mike Krack – Aston Martin “Needs” Upgrades to Keep Sebastian Vettel

Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack has admitted that the Silverstone-based team will need more upgrades in order to continue their fight up the grid.

After a somewhat embarrassing start to the season, Aston Martin has shown significant progress with its b-spec AMR22 but will need to make further strides forward if they are to climb further up the standings.

Mike Krack spoke to AMuS about the need to bring improvements as the first half of the season concludes. Not only is the team looking to improve its results, but Krack also acknowledges that keeping Quadruple World Champion Sebastian Vettel will surely require a more competitive package moving forward:

“The last three tracks have helped us. If we had driven in Barcelona three times, it would certainly have looked very different. For the tracks that are now coming, we need upgrades. And that’s why we decided to bring new parts now.

“Everything is so close, it doesn’t take much to make up several positions. If you can sit at the top of this group behind Mercedes, then the points score can be increased significantly.

“We now have to prove to him [Vettel] as best we can that we can improve the car. Barcelona was a good first step. Now I would like to give him a further step show. That might increase his desire to continue. After Silverstone, we’ll see where we stand. And then we’ll talk again.”

The British GP has seen various teams introduce significant upgrades to their car, including the significant modifications brought by Alpine and Williams.

In such a closely matched midfield, and with some teams (Haas, McLaren) not bringing major updates in the upcoming rounds, Aston Martin must take their chance and reproduce the performance that saw them competing at the top of the midfield in Baku.
