Jensen Button On Lewis Hamilton: “Maybe He Thinks His Career Is Over?”

No matter what upgrades Mercedes seems to pull out of the pits, they can’t seem to keep up with the likes of Ferrari or Red Bull. And no matter how much Lewis Hamilton pushes, he can’t seem to take on teammate George Russell. Of course, this has led to low confidence from the 7-time world champion, and while he promises he won’t give up, we can see his patience with the W13 dwindling.

Talking to The Chris Evan’s show on Virgin Radio, Jensen Button has talked about what could be going on for Lewis:

“The big shift for Lewis is that he’s driving a car that isn’t competitive in his world.

“He’s been fighting for the world championship since 2014 and his teammate has come, young upstart George Russell, and he’s been competitive.

“Because George is driving a car that’s actually better than he was used to, it’s given him confidence and he can push a bit harder, whereas Lewis has probably not got so much confidence in the car to be able to extract the maximum out of it,” Button told the show.

Russell has shown incredible performance so far this season, with him currently sitting fourth in the Driver Standings – a while 34 points ahead of Hamilton. He’s now looking to continue his streak of coming at least P5 as they head to Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

“When you’ve had a few bad races, it hurts mentally,” Button continued. “This is a mental sport, it’s not just physical. Lewis, as we all know, is one of the best in the world, if not the best in the world at driving a Formula 1 car.

“He will be competitive again if he wants to be. That’s the thing: maybe he thinks his career is over and he wants to go and do something else. Who knows?

“But Lewis, if he has a car that’s good enough to win, he will win races.”

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
