F1 Rumour: Daniel Ricciardo Is In Control Of McLaren Contract Break Clause

Despite rumours of McLaren canceling Daniel Ricciardo’s contract early because of poor performance, it’s been revealed that this isn’t actually possible after details on the contract have been defined.

Ricciardo hasn’t been able to match his teammate Lando Norris’ performance with 37 points between the two drivers after 7 races. This has obviously put the Australian driver under pressure which has only been amplified by McLaren chief Zak Brown who brought focus to this after the Monaco Grand Prix, telling the press that he’d “not met expectations” and that there are “mechanisms” in place to potentially end his contract.

But Scot Mitchell from The Race has reported that it isn’t down to McLaren:

“It’s Ricciardo with the option of triggering a break clause. So whether Ricciardo’s 2023 contract is upheld seems to be down to him.

“It seems to be his choice to make, at least. And it’s worth noting he has so far had nothing bad to say about how McLaren has treated him, or the effort it is putting in to help him turn things around.

“That’s important because how Ricciardo feels within McLaren will inform his decision.

“Either McLaren will decide to persevere to the very end or it will conclude this just isn’t working out and that it’s in its best interest if Ricciardo leaves. It could then try to encourage Ricciardo to do that.”

Ricciardo is yet to talk about his future within F1, but ha admitted that he isn’t able to drive his car “to the limit”:

“For me at the moment to get up to that, to push my car on the limit and to get it out of myself, it’s still a little bit of a difficulty or a battle,” he admitted.

“I say a little bit – it is, obviously. So it’s now really just trying to keep picking it apart. And I’ll also try and learn from last year.

“This is unfortunately known territory from 12 months ago. I think there’s things we did well in these situations and things that we probably look back on and say we could have probably done it differently.

“That’s where I’ll try and attack it in a more productive way.”

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
