With Mercedes carrying out more work on the W13, Toto Wolff believes that with a tiny bit more performance, the 7-time world champion would be able to come out in front of all four Red Bull and Ferrari drivers at Silverstone. This upgrade package could achieve this:
“I think if we give him a car that is just a few tenths off the leaders, he will win the race,” said an optimistic Wolff to Reuters.
“He’s the most complete driver ever and everybody has his favourite circuit and with Lewis it was always Silverstone, and Montreal and Hungary as well.
“I guess if you have 150,000 people cheering for you in the grandstands it gives you the home game advantage.”
With this new upgrade now in the books for Silverstone, Toto hopes that they will at least close the gap between Mercedes and the front-runners.
“I would hope so, that we have something that is closer to the leaders here than we had before,” he added.
If Hamilton won this weekend, it would not only be his first win of the season, but the first time an F1 driver has held 9 wins at a single Grand Prix. This would be a huge weekend for the racing driver if he’s able to pull this off.
“We are working towards that first win (of 2022),” said Hamilton. “It would be an incredible result if we got that this weekend.”
For Toto, he doesn’t mind if Lewis or George Russell takes it, he just wants to see a Silver Arrow in P1.
“Lewis deserves a strong result and a victory because he has been particularly unlucky this season and George’s driving was just spectacular,” he said.
“Him (Russell) winning a British Grand Prix would be like Lewis, both would be very exciting.”
