F1 News: Norris frustrated at losing P5 to Alonso at British GP

Lando Norris expressed his frustration at the end of the British GP, despite taking a strong P6 finish for the papaya squad.

Noris spent the majority of his race fighting Alpine’s Fernando Alonso, as the two drivers exchanged similar laptimes whilst maintaining a two-second gap throughout the race.

Unfortunately for Norris, a late safety car and slightly delayed reaction from the McLaren pitwall saw him lose a position to the Spaniard.

Norris told the media about his afternoon post-race:

“I’m happy because P6 is a good result for us, but it should have been P5 today.

The second start to the race was very strong and the pace was good – I held Fernando behind and then we just made the wrong call with the pit stop, with the strategy, and lost the position.

I felt like we deserved P5, but unfortunately we lost out at the final pit stop under the Safety Car. I think we drove a good race.

We did a lot of things very well today and we had reasonable pace in the car, it was just maybe a late call with the pit stop and that cost us one position today.

“I’m not annoyed, I think we still got some good points, but it could have been one more place. So a lot of positives, just one negative.”

Whilst Norris will be frustrated that he lost out at the end, his drive at Silverstone was representative of the consistency of his performances from this season.

He has played a key role in McLaren’s fight to hold off Alpine for fourth in the constructors, and will need to continue his current form to prevent the Woking team from finishing in the standings below their 2021 effort.
