F1 News: George Russell Admits Lewis Hamilton Is Still Number 1 In Mercedes

George Russell has been wowing fans as he currently sits second in the F1 drivers standings despite Mercedes struggling with severe performance issues from the beginning of the 2022 F1 season. Of course, this has been down to some good luck over his teammate Lewis Hamilton, and some serious bad luck within the Red Bull team.

But the British driver still insists that despite being the faster driver so far this season, he still comes second to Lewis Hamilton, who is currently fifth in the drivers standings. And while this has the potential to cause a rift between the drivers, there seems to be no such thing as they share experiences together such as surfing and sky diving.

Russell was asked about the relationship between himself and Hamilton, and gave a very modest reply:

“There is no number one or number two at Mercedes, but at the back of all drivers’ minds, they’re fighting for that top leadership spot, like, ‘I want to be the one’.

“Whereas for both of us, there isn’t that because Lewis has been here for so long, I’m the new kid within the team.

“I’m not going to go out there trying to be the leader of the team, when I’m going up against the greatest of all time who’s been here for 10 years.

“He is the captain of the team, and that’s how it should be.”

With Red Bull and Ferrari being so potent this year, the Mercedes drivers must work together to ensure a good place for the team in the constructors championship. While the dreams of becoming champion for both Russell and Hamilton are slowly fading, this could be the best they could hope for.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
