Abbie Eaton Returns To W-Series After Breaking Back Last Year – Gets Ready For Miami Race

After being in a serious incident late last year which crushed her vertebrae, Abbie Eaton has returned to W Series as one of the 18 drivers for the 2022 series. She joins 8 qualifiers from the 2021 Drivers Standings, 9 drivers from pre-season tests in Arizona and Barcelona, and 5 new drivers.

The Grand Tour driver made her debut in the W Series in 2021 where she earnt four top-10 finishes within 6 races. But due to the incident at the Circuit of the Americas in October, she was forced to retire while she focussed on getting back to good health.

Eaton’s incident pushed F1 driver Sebastian Vettel to comment on the danger of sausage kerbs, which caused the crash:

“I think the thing is that we have to take these sausage kerbs off, because we had two injuries that were unnecessary.

“And I’d rather have an endless conversation about track limits, and maybe one time you’re unhappy, another time you’re happy.

“I think we can find solutions to that. But the main thing is that we find a solution to broken backs, which is taking off these sausage kerbs.”

Eaton is set to join British racing driver Sarah Moore in the Scuderia W team as the season begins in Miami on 6-8 May later this year. Over the season it will continue to partner with the F1, and will support 8 race weekends with 10 races.

Eaton said:

“To have another opportunity with W Series is what I’ve wanted ever since I broke my back six months ago, so I’m relieved that all my hard work has paid off. I’m super excited to be back and hoping to get stronger as time goes on, but the tests and races I’ve done over the last few weeks have been promising and I’m looking forward to the first race in Miami.“

“I want to say a huge thank you to all of my friends, family, physios, trainers, donators, and neurosurgeon for helping me get back so quickly, and to W Series for giving me another chance“.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
