Why The Goodwood Revival Is The Best Event On The Automotive Calendar

The Goodwood Revival took place this past month, and in my opinion, it is the top event on the calendar without question. This event may not have the name recognition, manufacturer representation or displays of outright speed like the Goodwood Festival of Speed but makes it more special. It has a little bit of everything: racing, classic cars, classic motorcycles, racing drivers, celebrities, period correct clothing. If you can’t find something to like about the Revival, there is clearly is no hope for you.

The Revival was started in 1998 for the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Goodwood Circuit where the event is held. Cars from the era when the circuit opened are the focus of the weekend activities, 1948-1966 specifically. Located in Chichester, West Sussex, the circuit has been largely unchanged from original layout, except for the addition of a chicane before the start finish line. No modern vehicles are allowed on course other than safety vehicles.

Accomplished racing driver from all types of series take part in the various racing events throughout the weekend. Kenny Brack, Dickie Meaden, Dario and Marino Franchitti, Jeff Gordon, Ben Collins, and Derek Bell are some of the drivers who have competed over the years. The wheel to wheel racing put on by these drivers is spectacular. While updated safety equipment is installed in the vehicles, the powertrains and most importantly, tires are period correct. This leads to some jaw dropping feats of car control by the drivers.

The Goodwood Revival has many different races that take place over the weekend. They range from make/model only to mixed group racing, displaying some sensational David vs Goliath matchups. Manic Mini Coopers, Ford Cortina vs Ford Galaxie, Studebaker vs Alfa Romeo are just a few examples of what one could see during the Revival. The levels of competition are amazing for vehicles that are over 50 years old and worth six to eight figures. Put this on your gear/petrolhead bucket list.

The 2020 Goodwood Revival is scheduled for September 13th-15th.
