Weismann Returns With Project Thunderball: A Sports Car “Fit For The 21st Century”

It’s been almost three years since Wiesmann revealed its return in August of 2019, and therefore almost three years since they teased a really interesting sports car called the Gecko. This never came to fruition, but the German company now has revealed something new in the form of a couple of teaser photos and a video. The best bit? The name: Project Thunderball.

Tell us what you think!

Bond, is that you?

The company, kept in the green by entrepreneur Roheen Berry, has revealed a roadster with a long bonnet similar to that of the new BMW Z4, but with such a short front overhand, it maybe looks a tad weird? Either way, I’m hooked already. And while the cabin looks tiny for even an average-sized human, this is already looking very tempting. The car will maintain “the Wiesmann DNA of timeless design elegance combined with stunning yet refined performance” the marque promises.

While I’d love to tell you more, there’s actually not a lot more information available. It’s far too early to talk powertrain and chassis, but the Gecko was confirmed to use a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and like I said, this does look very Z4ish. But will it even be an ICE car?

“As the automotive industry undergoes its biggest revolution in a century, there can be no better time to announce the return of a refreshed, reborn and recharged motoring icon,” said Berry, teasing an electric powertrain.

Berry revealed that this is a “Wiesmann fit for the 21st century”, so an electric powertrain is looking likely, although I do wonder why have such a long nose in that case? “This is just the beginning,” we’re promised.

More information is coming soon, and we’ll of course keep you up to date.
