Watch Classic Cars Duke It Out At The Goodwood Revival

Nostalgia is a powerful force. Powerful enough for the Goodwood Revival to be created in 1998 as a way to enshrine what many consider to be the golden age of motorsport in the mid-20th century; during the event, races and other events are held for which the only eligible vehicles are those which raced in them in the 50s and 60s. Think of it like the Mille Miglia, which also only allows contestants which were registered in the original race, but on a track.

The St. Mary’s Trophy is one of the many races held over the three-day event, and in this practice race, we can see exactly why the event is so special:

Modern racing is incredibly fast and high-tech (or, in NASCAR’s case, just fast), which is all well and good, but it’s refreshing to glimpse a microcosm of what racing was like before many of us were even alive. Add to that a fantastic cadre of cars, from a second-generation Thunderbird to an Austin A40, and you get something which, for my money, is just as entertaining as F1 – especially on a slippery track, where several brave contestants end up biting the gravel.
