Video: Hillclimbing A 1000HP R34 Drift Car Has Never Been So Good!

Drift cars often get a lot of stick for being so specialised for their sport. Surely they can’t race on a track and compete with specialised track monsters? And surely they can’t take to a drag strip and outrun the cars with the fattest of tyres? Well, you’d be surprised.

The video above was taken at the Knysna Speed Festival and features a Nissan Skyline R34 with a power-plant taken straight from the R35 GT-R after being stroked to 4.2-litres to produce 1,000HP. It’s usually used for sideways drifting action, but this time, it was to be used for a hillclimb event at the hands of Wade Van Zummeren woh was competing alongside Wade was his father, Martin Van Zummeren.

Due to its shortened gearing, it wasn’t among the fastest of cars that day, but you can tell from the sheer speed it takes the corners that with a few tweaks here and there, it can certainly box with the best of them. Despite this, you can’t argue that there’s plenty of drama and excitement which goes alongside this turbocharged race car.

What else do we need from racing? Isn’t that the point?

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
