Toyota Teases The GR GT3 Plus A Highly Modified GR Yaris For 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon

Toyota was the most searched for car brand this past year, and some may question why that is. Well, this is why: Toyota creates crazy new cars, then tease them so well that I’d argue it’s the best in the business. Recently they’ve shown us a whole new lineup of potential EVs, teased a potential new MR2, and this was after releasing one of the best hot hatches… ever.

Toyota is on a roll, and now they’re planning even more.

The Japanese marque has something to reveal at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon which comes later this month, and it carries a very interesting name. The company’s calling it the GR GT3, and has given us one hell of a teaser photo while describing it as a “racing-dedicated concept car that incorporates the knowledge and refined technologies TGR has gained in the field of motorsports”.

Unsurprisingly, we don’t know much about what’s to come from this. But the outline of the new car looks very much like that of a Mercedes AMG GT with a sloping roofline and long bonnet. There’s a large wing at the rear, and vents over the front wheel wells, too. What sits beneath that long bonnet is also a mystery, but it’s likely that it will feature some sort of hybrid power.

But wait, that’s not all!

Another teaser comes in the form of a “fully tuned” GR Yaris, which could spell a higher performance version of the covetted AWD hatch. From what we can see, it has a carbon fibre bonnet with cooling vents, extra-wide arches, and a huge spoiler at the rear. It looks like Need for Speed has crapped all over it and I love it.

The other teaser depicts a “fully tuned” GR Yaris, which may or may not be related to that hardcore supermini our spies repeatedly captured on camera in 2021 testing at the Nürburgring. It could preview a potential GRMN version of the feisty all-wheel-drive hatch. From what we can see, it appears to have a ventilated carbon fibre hood, a widebody kit, and a chunky wing at the back.

The Tokyo Auto Salon will also reveal a number of GR heritage parts for the A70 and A80 Supra, the 2000GT, plus a few parts for a number of other previous sports cars and the Land Cruiser 40 Series.

Toyota is really unfolding its business to the car enthusiasts who have helped make the company so legendary. So to see this mutual appreciation between fans and the company itself is amazing.

The 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon takes place from January 14 to 16 at the Chiba Makuhari Messe convention centre.
