The New McLaren GT – What You Need To Know

McLaren is no stranger to releasing a new car, to the point where they have more models than most automakers with a total of twelve distinct breeds across their many genres of cars. This new GT will be under their new ‘Grand Tourer’ class, and will act like a baby Speedtail for those who haven’t got their hands on one.

But that doesn’t mean this isn’t a fast car. It really is. But before we get into the hard-hitting specs of this new car, let’s talk about the changes they’ve made to the exterior. It’s based on the 720S, but the all-aluminium body is completely new and embraces a subtlety that new McLarens haven’t had for a while. The nose sits 110mm higher at the front without the optional nose-lift system, and the glass is thicker to reduce road-noise in the cabin. Even the Pirelli P0s have sound-deadening foam in them in the name of luxury.

Reach under the rear shell and you’re greeted with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. In comparison to the 720S it’s got new pistons, new turbos, but slight less horsepower. 611bhp to be exact. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t pack a punch. It’s got a much flatter torque curve than the 720 which peaks at 465lb ft. At 1,530kg, it can sprint to 62mph in just 3.2 seconds, 0-124 in under 9 seconds, and a top speed of 203mph.

In the cabin there’s much more assistance on systems such as the steering and braking. The seats are more comfortable, and the infotainment system has had a much needed upgrade. The springs and antiroll bars are softer, and the adaptive coilovers have had a retune. Oh, and you get 570-litres of boot and frunk space. That’s better than a Mondeo!
