After countless photos and teasing from Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer on Twitter, the new DBX is finally here. Promising to be an SUV with the soul of a sports car, let’s take a closer look at Aston’s first step into the SUV market to see what separates this from the crop.
Sat on a new and dedicated all-aluminium SUV platform, the DBX is only slightly heavier than the Lamborghini Urus weighing in at only 2,245kg. Coupled with adaptive triple volume air suspension, a 48v electric anti-roll control system (eARC) and adaptive dampers, this will allow the DBX to adapt to almost any situation. It can hunker down by 50mm to improve on-road agility, or extend its suspension by 45mm to take on a green lane. Not that you would of course – we’ll get to the price at the end.
The spring stiffness can also be controlled to limit body movement for handling ‘that is much more akin to that of a sports car’, according to the press release. But, as most drivers will have it set, it can also be set to waft through bumps for the ultimate level of comfort.
Inside also offers the levels of comfort that you’d expect from the British marque. Because it’s a whole new platform, Aston was able to give plenty of head room and spaciousness in the cabin, and the hand-crafted interior is draped in seas of leather, Alcantara, and high quality woods and glass. To maintain the sense of space, it also features a full-size panoramic sunroof and frameless door windows. This is also a nod to the sports car design.
There’s plenty of space for your golf clubs and family and neighbours as you’d expect from a large SUV like this, and it includes all the safety tech you’d expect from a premium modern car including a central 10.25″ infoteinment screen and a 12.3″ screen for the driver behind the wheel, but there’s one thing you’re really here to see. And that’s its performance, so let’s leave the technical jargon and skip straight to the important bits.
Upfront is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 derived from the same unit found in the DB11 and Vantage, but here it makes slightly more horsepower sitting proudly at 550PS, 40 more than the DB11. Torque sits at 700NM, and we’re promised that it sounds just as good from the exhaust as it does saying those numbers. It manages to haul its weight to 62mph in 4.5 seconds, almost a second slower than the Urus, and will hit a top speed of 181mph.

DBX also marks a key moment in the delivery of the third and final phase of our Second Century Plan, not only representing the promised expansion of our portfolio but also signaling the start of production at Aston Martin’s second manufacturing plant. We have both delivered this model through our expertise, but also by garnering invaluable experience and knowledge from external counsel, including our Female Advisory Board. This is a real landmark for this great British brand and I promise that DBX will reward all who experience it in their everyday lives.”
Sitting at the prices of £158,000 in the UK, €193,500 in Germany and $189,900 in USA, this car will certainly mean money bags for the Gaydon-based company. While the stats don’t quite match up to Lamborghini’s first SUV, the DBX sits on an original frame unlike the VW-based Urus, and of course, the Aston Martin badge can sell itself.
