2022 GR86 Premium Six-speed automatic $31,800 $32,825

There are few remaining cars in the world that are both cheap (in comparison to most) and dedicated to the pure enjoyment of driving. The Toyota GR86 is exactly this, with a traditional front-engine rear-drive design, three pedals, and enough power to give you a good time while not enough to kill you. Fortunately, despite the prices of cars going crazy, the 2022 GR86 will only be 1% more expensive than its predecessor.

The car begins at just $27,700 for the entry-level variant of the GR86, only $640 more than the GT86, on top of this, the new car is much faster thanks to a change in engine. Of course, there’s a processing and delivery fee of just over $1,000, but you also had that with the old model. The base model, after this fee, comes in at just $28,725 which gets the full-fat 2.4-liter 4-cylinder producing 228 horsepower. That’s exactly the same amount as the most expensive variant. Of course, it comes with a 6-speed manual.

The GR86 Premium, on the other hand, costs an additional $6,000 compared to the previous model. The starting price is $30,300, which rises to $31,325 when the demand-based fee is taken into account.

Whether you pick the base version or the Premium, wanting the automatic gearbox adds another $1,500 to your purchase price. But, come on, do you really want a manual GR86? Not only does it give you full control over the gearing, but it’s also faster with a 0-60mph time of 6 seconds, a tenth faster than the auto.

Despite this, the automatic isn’t as bad as it sounds, with the changes being quick and… who am I kidding.

The 2022 GR96 will be available in dealerships from December.
