Tesla Glass Goes Orange After Rain – Here’s The Reason Behind It
What you’re looking at isn’t some form of photoshop. The glass really is a shade of rusty orange. But don’t be put off by it, this is only a reaction from the incredible glass Tesla uses for their roofs.
Owners of Model 3s and Xs have been waking up to find the roofs of their electric cars look like the surface of Mars – orange. This is because Tesla has used special glass on their cars to counteract what’s often called the greenhouse effect.
An electric car that’s constantly trying to lower the heat of its cabin will run through a battery’s charge very quickly, so glass which reflects UV radiation is the easy answer. This dual layer glass means the car doesn’t have to fight against the sun and interior temperature, which would quickly rise as the Tesla incorporates a lot of glass in its designs. The UV-reflective glass also stops people sat in the car from getting sunburnt – a soothing bi-product for many LA residents I’m sure.
But another bi-product of this can be seen when there is water sitting on its surface in the form of tiny droplets of condensation. Light refracts through the water, but the UV rays are reflected by the light and therefore travel through the water twice, changing the colour of the light to the rust-like colour you can see in the images and videos on this article.
Also, unlike the often purple-tinged glass that can be seen on some lower-end cars, this type of glass doesn’t block phone signal, which can be very annoying if you’re trying to use Waze or a similar app for navigation.
