Sung Kang’s Fugu Z Datsun 240Z To Get Twin Turbos In 2020 Revamp

Sung Kang has revealed that his legendary Fugu Z Datsun 240Z that made its name at SEMA 2015 is getting a host of new upgrades now it’s returned to the road. The car, currently a naturally aspirated RB26-powered sports car, has taken a long hiatus out of the public eye, but can now be seen in several of Sung’s posts on Instagram. In a recent interview with his site Sung’s Garage, he told us all.

“The COVID situation, I think it changed all of us. Either you went internal and it was about you and survival, or it’s about what can I do to contribute and help this problem and help people get over this?” he asked.

“I looked around and I said, well, what can I do? I’m not the picket line guy and I’m not curing cancer, I’m just an actor, man, that just likes cars.

“What can I do to put that smile on your face, Alex?”

He then explains how he knew there was only one thing he had to do.

“I realised I had it in the garage. I was like, well, she needs to come back out.

“People need to see her, they need to drive her, they need to touch her, they need to smell her and hear her. Do you know why? It’s because she’s coming to twin-turbo!

“She went to the surgeon, Kenji Sumino, and she got some twin turbos – some TTs! Some big TTs!”

The interviewer probes further, asking what the end goal of thee build is.

“Endgame is going back to what the car was designed for. I want the car to be safe, and I want it to be reliable and fun. And I want it to be able to go on the track, the canyons, and then to the grocery stores. I want to be able to teach people what this car means to me, I want to be able to explain to people the evolution from the L24, to the NA, to the twin-turbo RB26.”

Power figures are yet to be revealed, but Sung is adamant he wants “a gentlemen’s racer.” Who can blame him. The car is a gorgeous example of Japanese history, and such a thing would only be clouded by bringing numbers into the plan for the build.

Sung has always been interested in the stories and experiences learnt from a car, not the horsepower or torque or 0 to 60.

We’re very excited about this next generation of Fugu Z, and will keep you updated as we know more.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
