This Sideways VW Racecar Is Bonkers But Amazing!

There’s one racing series which is designed entirely around taking the piss. And it’s bloody brilliant!

It’s called the 24 Hours of LeMons – you already see what I mean – and it’s a race where each car involved is built on a budget of only $500 not including health and safety, of which is a bit lax in all honesty, but they try to keep you safe.

There’s only so much you can do when some of the cars look like this:

There’s a specific car I want to tell you about today, however. It’s named the Trippy Tippy Hippy Van. And it’s utterly stupid – and brilliant. Here it is in all its glory.

It’s put together by Speedycop and The Gang Of Outlaws, who mated the base of a 1988 Volkswagen Rabbit with a 1.8 liter 16 valve engine to a 1976 VW bus which had been rotting in a field for 20-odd years.

The skills and time that went into this perfectly encapsulates the meaning behind the LeMons race. Who else wants their own sideways race car?

Wouldn’t it be amazing if The Grand Tour did a LeMons race? That idea reminds me of this…

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
