Porsche Wins 24 Hours Of Le Mans In A Stunning Victory

I watch the 24 Hours of Le Mans every year, and every year at some point during the race I’m reminded of how much more exciting this is than Formula One (which, for the record, I have been watching for years and love).

With all the different classes of cars on a legendary course, something about Le Mans just seems more raw and exciting than the glitzy and polished world of Formula One.

Case in point, this weekend’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Porsche went from last to first in a mind blowing come from behind victory.

This marks the third year in a row that Porsche has taken home the glory, and comes at the end of a night filled with mishaps as the number one Porsche car suffered terminal issues.

The number two Porsche, shared between Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber, moved back into contention after being written off for having front axle problems, spending 90 minutes in the garage. When the number two Porsche rejoined the the field, it was 22 laps behind the leading Toyota.

Toyota, the early favorites hoping to become only the second Japanese manufacturer to win the race, suffered yet another heartbreak as they saw two of their cars retire in quick succession. Toyota had been runners-up five previous times including last year when their leading car broke down on the final lap.

“It can be the cruelest race or it can be the best race ever. You never know,” said Bernhard, who was driving when Porsche took the checkered flag.

“Every lap counted, every second, to get back to P1. The goal was to get maximum manufacturers’ and drivers’ points. Then this morning we saw that actually we can do a little bit more, maybe the podium.”

Perhaps Andre Lotterer, one of the drivers of the number one Porsche car, said it best:

“I’m speechless. It’s a crazy race.”
