Peugeot-Citroen Mulling A Return To America

What do you do if you want a European car with a crappy interior and dodgy-at-best reliability, but surprisingly good looks and that isn’t a Fiat Chrysler product? Well, up until now, your average Joe Carbuyer was plum outta luck–but those days are numbered, as new reports suggest that Peugeot-Citroen is finally considering a return to the States.

Renault pulled out in the late 80s after timidly joining hands with AMC and throwing themselves off a cliff, and Peugeot followed suit in 1991 as it became apparent there was much better quality to be had for less money from the Japanese. This fact was blazingly obvious by that point to literally everyone except the heads of the French car companies.

A report from Automotive News indicates that PSA is looking to engineer their next generation of cars to meet American safety and emissions standards, and CEO Carlos Tavares said that “three years down the road we’ll be able to push the button, if we decide to do so, in terms of product compliance vis-a-vis the U.S. regulations.”

Unfortunately it’s going to be a ten-year plan; they’re not dropping the Citroen Cactus and three dealerships in Tampa on our doorstep and saying good luck. They’ll probably take their time not only to build cars to meet our notoriously strict regulations, but to also come up with more than one car Americans might actually want.

So, yeah it’ll take a while. But hell, have you seen the inside of a Peugeot 3008? You certainly won’t get that with a quaint, domestic Chevy Cruze.
