New Subaru BRZ And Toyota GT86 Possible Reveal Next Month At Tokyo Motor Show

Both the Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ quickly became popular on their reveal back in 2012. Yes, it really has been that long. Everywhere you looked there would be one of these Japanese sports cars, usually modified to a certain degree due to their tunable design and pure features. But these days, sales are tailing off.

Despite this, Subaru and Toyota have confirmed that new models will be coming, the question is when. Neither companies have confirmed a release date as of yet, but a recent rumour from the Japanese magazine, Bestcar, has stated that the BRZ and GT86 could be shown at the next Tokyo Motor Show next month. Yes, it’s true that the tS BRZ and TRD Handling package has only been implemented into the new 2020 cars, but this timeline certainly isn’t impossible.

These new cars will push the cheap but capable sports car idea even further by implementing Toyota’s new GA-B chassis, which is based on the company’s New Global Architecture. This is more rigid and allows the use of a MacPherson-strut suspension set up at the front and either a torsion beam or multi-link rear setup at the back of the car. The new GT86 and BRZ will both use the latter.

This chassis will also allow the seats to be positioned further towards the floor to not only lower the centre of gravity, but to also give you an even better driving position.

The famous 2.0-litre Boxer engine will be replaced by the 2.4-litre turbocharged powertrain from the Subaru Ascent where it produces 260bhp. We’re not sure how the power will differ when this unit is placed in the noses of these sports cars.

If the previous models are anything to go by, these new cars are going to be serious bits of kit. With a chassis of stupendous performance and feel, and an aftermarket to match, these may be the must-buys of Japanese performance cars.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
