Did The New 911 GT2 RS Just Set A Nurburgring Lap Record?

Back in March, Lamborghini knocked the Porsche 918 Spyder off the top of the Nurburgring Nordschleife lap times by pulling in a 6:52.01 in a Huracan Performante and setting a new production car record. Naturally Porsche wasn’t about to just sit back and let this slide.

A Porsche GT2 RS was spotted at the Ring running some laps on its own today. Dale Lomas of Bridge to Gantry was at the track and managed to snap a picture of the GT2 RS hitting Turn 13, then snapped a photo when the car completed one lap and reached Turn 13 again.

According to the timestamps on the two photos, less than seven minutes has elapsed between the two passes. Accuracy aside (Lomas’ position wasn’t the best to see the start/finish line), that puts the GT2 RS at a sub-seven minute lap time. Lomas even thinks the lap time could possible top the Huracan Performante’s.

With no onboard footage yet, there’s no way to prove from Lomas’ pictures that the car actually performed an entire lap around the Nordschleife, so at this point we need to take this information with a grain of salt. Until we get some concrete info, let’s see who will remain the king of the ring!
