Mustang Shelby GT350R Driven by Ken Miles Sells for $3.85 Million, Breaking Auction Record
What Mustang could possibly hope to sell at auction for a higher amount than the Steve McQueen “Bullitt,” which went for $3.4 million this year? How about the original Mustang Shelby GT350R?
That’s right, the one and only car driven by Ken Miles back in 1965. It was the first Shelby R Mustang, designed to take on Ferrari. The one to win the first race for the pony brand.
Mecum Auctions were tasked with selling the car. Although its sticker-price was $4,000 back in the 60s, it went for a whopping $3.85 million dollars.
This “Flying Mustang” was a one-off prototype that was driven by a ton of test and race drivers before eventually settling in the Shelby Museum in Colorado.
It was sold to a private collector in 2010, and restored for the Mustang 50th anniversary in 2014.
Regardless of the GT350R’s insane pedigree, it’s also just a beautiful car. It’s iconic LeMans stripes and performance were largely what launched the entire Mustang brand into prominence.
Whether it was in a museum or on the track, this special car deserved and recognition it received.
No doubt this thing won’t be racing, or even driving, after that much was spent on it. Wouldn’t it be nice to take it on a track one more time?
