This is the Model Y, and is the sixth Tesla to come from the brain of Elon Musk, including the Roadster 2.0. It also completes the S3XY lineup, but more importantly, could very well be the best selling Tesla yet.
Tesla tells us that it will be able to fit 7 full-sized adults when a full third row of seats is ticked on the options list, unlike the Model S which had a small pair of rear-facing seats for children. And to keep costs down, it shares 75% of its parts with the Model 3. This could very well be a big moneymaker for Tesla, as its crossover size and characteristics will be appreciated by a large share of the market.
Inside and out it, unsurprisingly, looks very similar to the Model 3. It has only one large screen for information readouts with no cluster, and from the outside it looks like the 3 has been to the gym for a few months. Its performance is mostly similar, too, as is its price.
Starting at $39,000, it will have a range of 230 miles and will crack 60mph in just 5.9 seconds. But coming in 2020, the top Performance model will take it to a blistering 3.5 seconds with a 280-mile range. Of course this comes with a heavier price tag of $60,000.
A nice medium however, would be the $51,000 Dual Motor AWD version, which has a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds with a range of 280 miles, but if range anxiety is your thing, the Long Range will cost you 4 grand less but give you 20 more miles. It’s just not quite as fast at 5.5 seconds to 60.
The new Y is compatible with V3 superchargers too, which give a ridiculous rate of charge at 1,000 miles per hour. Future, we have certainly arrived.
The Model Y will round out what Tesla has to offer to the market, and go head to head with some popular ICE cars as well as other EVs such as the Jaguar iPace. There is no shortage of good cars in this niche however, but Tesla more than has the brand image to compete on popularity alone.
Production will begin in September 2020 at 2,000 cars a week. We’ll have to see if this actually comes to fruition after the bad luck Tesla had with the Model 3, but despite this, this car is going to be one to watch. Make it count, Tesla.
