Here’s The Quickest Aston Martin In The World – A 2,500bhp 1970 DBS

I’m an avid consumer of anything involving a drag strip and a set of wheels. I’ve seen V8 Smart cars obliterate powerful Mustangs. I’ve seen tyres pop launching a car to the side in a flurry of fire and smoke. I’ve been up close and personal with ear crushing 9,000hp engines. But never before have I seen an Aston Martin liner up in front of the Christmas tree.

Although this isn’t quite an Aston Martin, is it? This 1970 DBS V8 has been repurposed to leave 11s and win on the strip, but that’s meant not a lot of the original car is left.Β Almost all the panels have been touched to make it more aerodynamically slippery, the interior has been scooped out to lighten and improve rigidity, and the powertrain, oh, the powertrain.

The original V8 has been swapped for a much more powerful 9.3-litre Chevrolet big block. Mated to a 118mm turbocharger, this baby now makes a not-so-british 2,500bhp. If that figure doesn’t make you shake in your boots, then maybe the fact that this car is still road legal (according to the owner), will.

Owner Mark Todd was able to set the impressive time of a 7.81 quarter-mile time with a top speed of 179mph. After some more experience behind the wheel of this impressive machine, he was able to set an even faster record of 6.93 seconds, with a top speed of 202mph, making this the quickest Aston Martin in the world.

This car has had an interesting but shrouded history. According to the bods over on Piston Heads, it was actually built by Al O’Connor in the Aston Martin factory. Since then it has been owned and raced by several people. It was meant to compete in a series called Supergas, but that quickly fell through.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps.

He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX.
