Hands On With The Forza Motorsport 7 Demo

Before I say anything else, I want to touch upon the subject of 4K gaming. Prior to getting myself a 4K TV recently, I honestly didn’t think the difference between 4K and 1080p would be that extreme. It was noticeable, but not WOW noticeable.

As far as TV goes, that’s true. However, with gaming, the difference is staggering. All this to say that Forza Motorsport 7 on a 65 inch screen on an Xbox One S looks spectacular. And that’s on an Xbox One S, which doesn’t even have true 4K! I’m just talking about HDR and 1080p upscaling. I can’t even imagine what this game will look like on an Xbox One X with “true” 4K resolution.

Visuals aside, the FM7 demo gave us a pretty good look at what to expect in a couple of weeks when the game launches. Anyone who has ever played a FM game before will feel right at home. The core experience hasn’t changed much, so FM vets should be able to jump right in and get cranking.

Perhaps the biggest change is dynamic weather. In FM6, you had the option of playing a track in the rain, but you were stuck with the rain either on or off the whole time. In FM7, the weather will come and go throughout the race, and believe me, your driving will NEED to change.

There’s nothing quite as exciting as starting on a dry track, then watching the rain roll in and suddenly having to deal with puddles and an extreme loss of traction. Having to change the way you drive mid-race is very exciting.

I noticed a few other differences, but they were mostly small and of the aesthetic variety. For instance, the shift lever and paddles now move, and if playing in the cockpit view, you will notice a much more dramatic camera shake when moving onto high speeds.

Not all the changes are great, however. There is a new option called “Friction Assist” which basically makes it so anytime you leave the tarmac and hit grass or dirt, you don’t experience any change in friction and handling or speed.

Long story short, you can now cut through the off track portions of a circuit and basically lose no speed. I’m not entirely sure what Turn 10 was thinking when they added that feature, and thankfully it can be turned off.

That aside, I’m looking forward to the biggest Forza Motorsport game yet! October 3rd can’t come soon enough!
