Fancy Pants Vacuum Man James Dyson Will Build An Electric Car By 2020
In 1991, James Dyson started building vacuum cleaners that operated by channeling the raw dust-busting power of a tornado into a plastic canister the size of one of those pneumatic pipes at bank drive-thrus. Fast forward a couple decades: the company, still doing good business, is now also building inside-out fans and obnoxiously loud hand dryers that blast you with air traveling at over 400mph.
But Mr. Dyson’s latest conquest, surprisingly, has nothing to do with air–instead, he wants to build an electric car. I figured if anyone could figure out a car that ran on compressed air, it’d probably be him, but no; he says the car will be “radical and different,” and much like his vacuums and fans, won’t sit alongside the rest of the market.
Dyson’s team of over 400 employees has been working on the car for two years in secret, but so far the only thing they have to show for their efforts is the car’s electric motor; knowing Dyson, the final product will probably be made of brightly-colored plastic to save weight. Dyson’s also given his company a deadline of 2020 to shoot for, and he seems like the man that could make that happen. Further development is set to take place at the firm’s center at Hullavington in Wiltshire.
The car will probably be filled with much exciting technology, though there’s no word yet on whether the car will come with a built-in vacuum cleaner.
