Does Your State Have The Worst Drivers? Full 2019 Statistics Here

A friend of mine is travelling up from Essex to come and see me in Birmingham this weekend. Obviously, this started a discussion on which area of England had the worst drivers. He was sure Essex was plagued by the worst drivers, but I was sure that I’ve never seen so more older drivers travelling at 40mph on 70 roads than around me. And don’t get me started on city drivers.

This was an incredible debate lots of input from friends, but no actual stats to back any of our claims. Me, knowing that GTN’s readers would love to join the debate but with the majority being from America, I went on the hunt for stats for the US of A.

Smart Asset is apparently the leading website for driver statistics, so I present to you the worst states for driving around America. According to the article, Smart Asset conducts its own research using auto insurance data, DUI rates, vehicle fatality rates, and even parking tickets to compile its list. It is as follows:

  1. Mississippi
  2. Alabama
  3. California
  4. Florida
  5. Nevada
  6. Texas
  7. Arizona
  8. Alaska
  9. Tennessee
  10. Missouri

The findings here are obvious: The majority of states with the worst drivers are in the South, with Mississippi earning itself top spot on the worst drivers list. No other region comes close to the majority the southern states hold.

New Mexico has dropped off this list after its place last year, with Nevada, which technically ties with Florida this year, replacing it. You can find the full list of states below.

Let us know below which state you’re from and if you agree with this list. We’d also love to hear from you if you live outside of the US. Comment below!

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps.

He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX.

  1. NY 47th!? I have driven in all the states east of the Mississippi, the the mid Atlantic states have some of the worst drivers. Florida is pretty bad as well, Iā€™d say NY and Florida are about equal as far as poor driving skill and etiquette.

  2. As a professional driver, I go or have been everywhere. I won’t talk states but I will talk regions. New England and the Mid Atlantic are some of the most agressive and discourteous. Southeastern drivers and west cost are next. Intermountain west, great planes amd midwestern ate the top 3. Older cities with stable population are generally better than the newer big cities. Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, Houston, Dallas are among the worst. Louisville, Cincinnati and Indianapolis and Denver are not much better.
