Couple Driving To South Pole In 3D Printed, Solar Powered Car Made Of Garbage
A while ago now, Top Gear decided to set themselves the challenge of driving to the magnetic North Pole. They took a modified Toyota Hilux made by Arctic Trucks and succeeded. But this was a truck that was incredibly sophisticated with a specialised fuelling system and a chassis made to withstand the treacherous environment of one of the most dangerous parts of the Earth.
A couple hav decided to do something very similar with their very own vehicle. They want to drive across Antarctica, but not in a truck – in their very own 3D printed, solar powered behemoth, which they’ve named the Solar Voyager. Oh, and I should probably add that it’s made of rubbish. Literally.
The journey is going to take them 30 days in their zero waste-producing vehicle, aided only by the sun which powers the electric motors. It weighs 1,485kg, and to lower their total weight even further, they’re not taking any water. Looks like they’ll be eating ice!
In total they’ll be driving almost 1,500 miles in temperatures that reach as low as -30C. That would be fine if the vehicle had heating, but it doesn’t. How the electrical systems and batteries are going to cope I have no idea…
