Bugatti Veyron Takes On Its Older Brother Chiron In Epic Drag Battle

When the Bugatti Veyron debuted in 2006, it established a new bar for hypercars to reach. With nearly 1,000 horsepower on tap from its incredibly refined and efficient 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine, the French (German) hypercar became not only one of the most powerful cars ever built, but also the fastest factory car in the world. But 15 years have passed since then, and a successor to the Veyron has been released: The Chiron.

With hundreds more horsepower than the Veyron at around 1,500 depending on the variation, the Bugatti Chiron is now not only at the top of its game in terms of power and speed, but also technology. Featuring an all-new quad-turbocharged engine, active aerodynamics, adaptive suspension with electronically adjustable ride height, dual-clutch transmission with paddle shifters behind a steering wheel that swivel around to meet your hands, carbon fiber monocoque chassis with exotic materials like titanium and magnesium throughout for minimal weight carryover from previous iterations (almost), this car marked a huge step forward in hypercar engineering.

Now, they’ve been placed head to head thanks to YouTuber Stradman.

The race was held on a one-mile airstrip, allowing both cars to reach triple-digit speeds. And while the Veyron is exceptionally fast, the Chiron is obviously faster.

The two rockets from the line, but the Chiron is faster, pulling away from the Veyron while increasing in speed. The Veyron reached a top speed of 190 miles per hour (305 kilometers per hour) before the driver applied the brakes, with it still pulling away from the Veyron at the end of the race.

The Chiron is a quantum leap ahead of the Veyron in terms of engineering. But electric cars are likely to surpass the Chiron with them already showing promise in the shape of the Rimac Concept One and Nevera. In fact, Bugatti has teamed up with Porsche and Rimac for a new project dubbed Bugatti-Rimac, although jointly developed vehicles, including EVs and hybrids, will come later. The Chiron and its tremendous variants will have to wait until then. It’s unquestionably a powerful hypercar, but we can’t wait to see what the marque has planned for the future.
