The ID.R Takes Another Nurburgring Record – 6:05.336 Lap

A little less than a year ago, Volkswagen did something incredible. With a dream and a goal, Volkswagen set out to build the most exciting dominant race car ever. Oh, and it was to be an all electric 670hp giant killer.

What they were able to achieve was a new record at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado, known to be one of, if not the most fierce and dangerous hillclimbs in the world. And this record was not just for electric cars, but for all cars.

The Volkswagen ID.R that is incredible. 0-60 in under 2.25 seconds a total weight of under 2,5000lb, and more than 670hp from two electric motors on the rear axles.

But that was 2018. In 2019 something insane happened: Volkswagen took the ID.R and driver Romain Dumas, known for his record-setting run at Pikes Peak, to the Nurburgring. With one goal in mind, they beat the NIO EP9 and became the fastest electric vehicle around the Ring. Not only did they beat it they smashed it into millions of pieces.

With a goal to beat of 6:45.9, Romain Dumas proved that he deserved to be driving by managing to take off over 40 seconds! Keeping in mind 10 seconds is a year in car time… So what was Romain able to do with the ID.R? An astounding 6:05.336 lap.

Unfortunately, Volkswagen was not able to take the overall track record. While technically belonging to VW, the record is in the hands of the Porsche 919 hybrid Evo with a 5:19.546 death grip of a record.

Though sad that the ID.R could not take the overall track record, blowing off 40 seconds from the previous holder is still amazing and a great way to show that EVs are here to stay, and they’re coming for internal combustion with a vengeance.
