The Grand Tour

The Grand Tour-Season 2, Episode 1: The 2018 Ford Mustang’s “Good Neighbor Mode”

When I first bought my 2015 Mustang GT, I went into the purchase knowing full well that in a few year’s time, there would be a refresh. It happens pretty much every generation, and each refresh usually finds a way to improve upon its predecessor. I loved the 2015 model so much that I didn’t care, so I went ahead and bought one.

Fast forward to today, and the 2018 model refresh is rolling out to customers with more power, more torque, a better performance package, and what I think is ones of the most attractive front ends and hood I have ever seen on a Stang.

Another small feature that might be overlooked is the one that Jeremy mentioned on Conversation Street; the Good Neighbor Mode. I used to have a neighbor with a Corvette Z06 that was de-catted with straight pipes, and boy, that thing was LOUD. He often let it idle in the driveway, waking up my kids when they were still infants.

One of the first things I was very wary of when I got my Mustang was the noise. I love a loud roar, but I’m pretty sure my neighbors don’t. If I’m waking up at 5AM to head into the city for Cars and Coffee, it would be nice to not wake everyone else up.

The Good Neighbor Mode is essentially a fancy name for an active exhaust, something that has been on many other sports cars and until the 2018 model year, was only available as an aftermarket option for the Mustang. Being able to set the time of day in which to activate Quiet Mode, however, seems to be a new thing.

As long as you’re not a jackass and are aware that you aren’t the only one living in your neighborhood, then I could see Good Neighbor Mode being used quite often. Of course, seeing as how it’s a standard feature, once you start popping aftermarket parts onto your exhaust, all bets are off.
