If you are like me you have grown up watching Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond going about doing what they do best. Cause mayhem, tell jokes, make fun, oh and review cars.
But how well do we actually know them? Where did they come from? What did they do before they were “Top Gear”?
Since we just celebrated the 10th anniversary of his famous crash, let’s start with the Hamster, Richard Hammond
Hammond, (aka The Hamster), was born December 19, 1969 in Solihull, Warwickshire, England. After living there for a bit he moved to the North Yorkshire cathedral city of Ripon where he spent most of his childhood and teen years.
From 1986 to 1988, Hammond attended Harrogate College of Art and Technology. Upon graduation Hammond worked for several BBC radio stations before auditioning for Top Gear in 2002, including:
- Radio Cleveland
- Radio York
- Radio Cumbria
- Radio Leeds
- Radio Newcastle
- Radio Lancashire
He was married to Amanda Etheridge in 2002 and has 2 children.
Currently the Hammond family lives in a mock castle in Herefordshire and also has an apartment in London. Hammond enjoys playing the bass guitar, loves riding his bicycle and motorcycles and does not like the band Genesis, (who would have thought?).
In 2010 Hammond gained a private pilot license in a Robinson R44 helicopter and in March 2012, passed his B206 LST helicopter license.
In September 2006, Hammond was involved in a high-speed dragster crash while filming near York, (you can read more about that here), which took him out of the rest of Season 8. He was able to return in the first episode of series 9 and was done so with a welcome of all welcomes.
Free time…..What free time?
During his time entertaining us on Top Gear, Hammond has kept real busy and has been a part of many other television shows. From guest starring to hosting multiple other television shows. Here are a very few highlighted other works.
- Brainiac: Science Abuse
- The Gunpowder Plot: Exploding The Legend.
- Should I Worry About…?
- Planet Earth Live
As well as many many more gigs.
Why we’ve come to love The Hamster
Hammond has accomplished much in his life but what are some of the things that we come to love and adore?
Is it his love for Oliver?
Is it because he’s a “secret American”?
Or is it his huge caring heart and generosity that he shows towards every single person he meets?
No matter the reason, Richard Hammond is a standup guy and we can’t wait to see what else he has in store for us.
So here’s to you Richard Hammond! Thank you for all you’ve done.
We all look so very forward to seeing what you have in store for us on Grand Tour!
