This ’79 Mercedes-AMG Wagon Is The Perfect Sleeper And It’s For Sale

For some reason, us petrolheads are always yearning for something we call a ‘sleeper’. It’s a car that, on the face of it, shows very little performance. There are no large wings. Instead, there’s maybe room to fit your dog in the boot. See it in a car park and you’ll walk straight past it. But drive it, and you’ll be surprised by the hidden talent of a finely tuned engine and accurate chassis.

This Mercedes-Benz 500TE AMG wagon is exactly the kind of car we’#re after. It fulfils the sleeper status, but to the lucky owner, it’s a sports car on steroids. To the everyday folk there’s nothing interesting about this car, but for those with an eye for anything wheeled, we’d sniff out those colour- matched wheels and front grill, and spot the slight AMG tweaks of the bodywork.

We’d eventually work out after a quick Google that this is the 276bhp emitting, 5.0-litre V8 equipped wagon that scares off the likes of BMW’s finest. Yes, that’s not a massive amount of power these days, but back in the day it was a force to be reckoned with.

The best thing about this car though, is the fact it’s being auctioned off by Sotheby’s later this year in April. And if you’re anything like me, you’re going to be watching the auction with your wallet in your hand.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
