The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Could Be Returning

We’ve all been very disappointed with Mitsubishi lately. It’s been years since we last heard about a fast Lancer, or even a car hasn’t got a name followed by the term ‘SUV’. But this could be changing very soon, as rumours have surfaced regarding a new Lancer Evolution. Yep, that’s perked your ears, hasn’t it?

Autocar is hopeful that a new Evo will be based on the CMF-C/D F4 platform. And if that’s a bit of a tongue twister for you, it’s simply the an architecture that’s been developed by Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi.

According to Autocar, this new Evo may share bits and pieces with the new Renault Sport Meganes such as its 2.0-litre turbo engine and dual-clutch gearbox. Of course, unlike previous models of the iconic Jap saloon, the Megane will be front-wheel drive. Mitsubishi won’t allow that, and will definitely trick the car out with their whizz-bang AWD systems that are built from what they’ve learnt through their long history of rally racing. There’s a reason why they call their system, S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control).

This is however only a rumour. So let’s not get too carried away. It hasn’t been long since Rob Lindley, managing director of Mitsubishi UK said himself that the company isn’t looking at performance cars anymore.

“Mitsubishi’s focus is now SUVs, crossover, four-wheel drive, along with alternative fuel technology […] If you try and be in all the different segments of the market and follow trends, like sports cars, it would be difficult to be economically viable.”

As we know from BMW’s Supra (hehe), brand collaborations are able to make even what seems impossible a reality, so let’s sit quietly with crossed fingers to see what is revealed in the coming year. A Nissan GT-R chassis could make the perfect base for a new Evo…

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
