How Far Can You Go On An Empty Tank?

Generally, there are two types of people: those who are running on fumes before grudgingly filling up, and those who starts to get nervous at the 3/4 mark and can’t take it anymore by the time they get to half.

But carmakers often underestimate how far you can go when designing fuel gauges, and few people want to risk testing it for fear of stranding themselves on the hard shoulder. Luckily, our friends at CarThrottle decided to find out once and for all, in a somewhat beaten-up Honda Accord.

Intrepid petrolhead Alex Kersten set out to do 50 miles from the point the needle dropped to empty, on a mix of roads ranging from motorways to holding up traffic on a narrow British high street, and ended up doing a whopping 99 miles (hindered only by an immediate flat tire) before the plucky Honda finally gave up the ghost.
