Audi Built A 600hp Engine That Weighs Just 85kg

DTM is undergoing big changes, one of these being a change to the engines used by the cars involved. Long gone are the large 4.0-litre V8s that scream so well, instead being replaced by a turbocharged inline-four.

On reading that I expect the majority of you have let out a low groan of disappointment. As did I when I first found out, but it’s really not all that bad. These smaller engines have a displacement of only 2.0-litres, but only weigh 85kg. And if you think power’s down, then think again! Power is actually increasing by 100bhp to 600 while fuel consumption is going down to only 95kg per hour. See, not only does it care for us, but it cares for the polar bears as well.

Audi has let out a sneak peak of their new powertrain to suit the regulations, and it sure makes one hell of an impact. Take a look below.

This engine should be making its way into eight of Audi’s RS5 silhouette race cars and will compete against new entrants Aston Martin, and the talented boys of BMW. Add on the push-to-pass system, and we’ll be watching some  very high powered cars take battle in some of the greatest races in the industry. Plus, Audi are very interested in this technology trickling down into their road cars.

“In terms of weight and lightweight design – especially in the context of avoiding CO2 emissions – we’re pointing out a few approaches that will hopefully find their way into future road-going vehicles – like in the case of the first TFSI for Le Mans and the TDI.”

You want a less-understeery Audi, try having an 85kg engine tucked up front.
