A Formula 4 race at Donington Park, Derby went horribly wrong when young racing driver Billy Monger was involved in a high speed impact with another car driven by Patrik Plasma.
The crash was broadcast on TV as part of the race coverage and showed the violent crash. Race officials stopped the race while rescue teams worked to free Billy for over an hour while he was trapped and conscious in the vehicle before being taken to hospital via air ambulance.
Plasma was also taken to hospital but is thought to have not been seriously hurt.
Billy has been placed in an induced coma and has had both of his lower legs amputated because of this awful crash. Please, go to his fundraising page and donate what you can. The money will be used to help Billy beat his life changing injuries and help him move forward.
The JustGiving page reads:
“Well known in Motorsport for being not only an extremely talented young driver but for also being a truly special 17 year old – loved and admired by his team, fellow competitors, supporters and of course his devoted family. Billy is a complete one off, a cracking young man with a spark that makes it impossible for anyone not to like him. Full of spirit, Billy is one of those people that instantly lights up a room. His positive, plucky outlook on life is not only hugely endearing but also incredibly inspirational and it’s phenomenal to see how respected and loved Billy is.
“We are in the process of establishing a Trust to receive, hold, manage and expend funds for Billy’s benefit. In the meantime you can help start the process by donating online. Donations will be used to fund the care, treatments and therapies required by Billy in the immediate future and going forward, helping him to return to a full and active life.”
From all of us at Grand Tour Nation, we wish Billy and his family the best and will be thinking of them after this dreadful news.
