Video: A 1200hp Volkswagen Golf Vs A Bugatti Chiron

This is not a comparison I expected to see any time soon. I still don’t completely understand, but I don’t need to understand because I’m just here to write about it.

So let me explain this to you. The new Bugatti Chiron – we all know how fast this car is. An estimated top speed of 288mph, 1500bhp and 1200lb-ft of torque. A pure numbers car.

Compare this to the Mk2 Golf… Not a bad car by any means, but it’s not what most people would call fast, and it’s definitely not a numbers car. That’s unless it carries the number, 1200. 1200 horses in fact, underneath the bonnet of a car that originally had 110. That’s almost a 1000% increase for those of you who are mathematically minded, and for a car that weighs less than a shopping trolley… Well, the performance is brutal.

But how brutal is a power to weight ratio better than a Koenigsegg One:1? That was a rhetorical question, but if you really wanted to know the answer, that’s in the video too.

So how does this German hatchback make as much horsepower as a Hennessey Venom GT?

The drivetrain has been converted to a 4motion setup – basically VW’s version of the Audi Quattro system – with a ported 2 litre 4 cylinder and the biggest turbo I’ve ever seen running 4,4 bars of boost. The car prefers the taste of E85 ethanol while running at full boost, at which point 0-60 is obliterated in 2.3 seconds (I’m no good at this tech talk, so watch this video instead).

Gob smacking.

Watch the video as it goes head to head with some of the fastest vehicles in the world, and ultimately dominates them.

The Chiron was the hypercar to beat… Not anymore.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
