It’s next to impossible to go to a hill-climb event and not see an accident at some point during the day. Some of them are incredibly heroic and feature mighty hill-climbing vehicles wrestling with traction. But ultimately failing and smashing extravagantly into the guard rail.

This accident isn’t so gallant. It takes place at the Bergrennen Reitnau, an event in Switzerland. The track climbs 365 feet up the side of the Alps, making it a treacherous environment for drivers and their steeds. Like nearly all hill-climbs it is put together using public roads and strategically placed barriers, which means the cars have to plough through odd cambers, uneven surfaces and tight corners.

For the amateur driver, high downforce with a moderate level of power is the key to this event. Lose your grip and you’ll probably lose your car.

The objective is simple. Fastest car to the top wins. Don’t crash. Don’t fall off the mountain.

This Formula car driver obviously didn’t get the memo. He didn’t even reach second gear.

If I was to go to a hill climb event, I’d take a Mitsubishi Evo IV. Very lightly tuned, focusing on the suspension, tyres, and aero. Let’s not forget a roll cage, either! I wouldn’t focus on power as I’d be too scared to use it anyway. And let’s not forget, the more power you use, the more chance of a horrible death.
