When it comes to wings on cars, there seem to me three groups of people: 1) let’s pop the biggest wing known to man on a Civic, 2) Wings are stupid, bro. Too ricey! 3) Wings serve a specific purpose, so it makes sense on certain cars. Of course, in the age of internet forums, Group 3 rarely gets heard. it’s always one of the two extremes making the loudest noise (pretty good metaphor for life in general, isn’t it?).

Yesterday, Richard Hammond posted a DriveTribe piece on his favorite wings, and it got me thinking about this important piece of aero that’s so often abused. I’m pretty involved in the Mustang scene in California, and you would be shocked at some stuff that comes out of people’s mouths regarding cars that aren’t even theirs. There seems to be quite a culture of wing hate in the muscle car community…much of it unfounded. it was extremely interesting to me that Hammond posted a list of his favorite wings, all of them which my Mustang brethren would consider “too ricey.”

I won’t go into great detail with Hammond’s favorites. I’ll simply list them here; if you want specifics, you can check out Hammond’s post:

– Dodge Viper ACR
– Ford Escort RS Cosworth
– Porsche 911 Turbo 930
– Dodge Charger Daytona
– Porsche 911 GT3 RS 991
– Pagani Zonda 760 RS
– Ferrari F40
– Subaru Impreza WRX STI
– Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV
– Koenigsegg One: 1

All of these serve a purpose on the car they were designed for, and while pretty much all of the are large enough to eat dinner off of, they’re all functional. Hammond’s piece got me thinking: what are my favorite wings? Honestly, I don’t have many. I don’t live in the supercar world, so most cars I have experience with don’t need wings, but I do have a few Mustang friends that track their car regularly and have race wings on theirs.

A personal favorite of mine is the Steeda Race Wing. It’s track tested, functional, and not so big that it looks like Andre the Giant’s picnic table:

Another personal favorite is the upcoming Corvette ZR1’s race wing. On certain body styles, a big gaudy wing just seems to work (image below is a render, I thought it look better than a spy shot):

And another wing that seems to stand the test of time:

So let’s hear it from you guys! What are your favorite car wings? And just to make it interesting, let’s see your examples of the worst wings as well!
