The Grand Tour Finale Showed Us The Most Expensive Tires…In The World

A permanent fixture during The Grand Tour this series has been Jeremy starting each show with a monologue, during which he introduces the location where the tent was set up, and take a moment to poke fun at it. During the series finale, when they were located in Dubai, he expounded on the wealth of the area.

Jeremy cited examples, from gold dispensing ATM machines, a cab driver who found a gold bar in his taxi at the end of the day, to over-the-top public transportation. James brought up the cars popular among the authorities, such as a Lamborghini Aventador, a Mercedes SLS and a Bugatti Veyron. Clarkson’s final luxury example was a set of tires from a UK-based company called Zenesis.

Though this manufacturer offers a wide range of everyday road tires, the set Jeremy had in mind were a bit more expensive. In fact, the tires he was referring earned a title from the Guinness Book of World Records for the most expensive tire last year, at $600,000 a set! So what made them so spendy?

According to TyrePress, it isn’t the rising prices for raw materials that accounts for this trouser troubling price tag. It has more to do with the hand-selected diamonds and 24 karat gold-leaf embedded in the logo.

“The cost can be attributed to the addition of 24 karat gold and specially selected diamond stones. According to Zenises, these Midas-like touches were added with the assistance of Joaillier Prive and its Italian artisan jewelers before the tyre was returned to the UAE for the application of gold leafing by the same craftsmen who have worked on the new presidential palace in Abu Dhabi.”

So, can you actually use these tires on a car, on the road? In a word,  yes. In order to earn their title from the Guinness Book of World Records, the tires had to be completely functional and commercially available. Though this does beg the question of whether or not you would actually want to use tires which cost more than a fully loaded and customized Rolls Royce Phantom…

We imagine there would be a certain amount of concern when you leave them in the parking lot. Can you imagine the anxiety of parallel parking with these tires? What would you do if you scraped up against the curb and knocked out a diamond?! That being said, a better question might be “what would my driver do, if they scraped against the curb and knocked out a diamond?”, as anyone purchasing these tires surely has someone to do the driving for them.
